Telegram doesn't work even with VPN: what to check
Since spring 2026 Telegram in Russia has been unstable: photos and videos load slowly, voice messages don't send, messages arrive late. With Faygo VPN on, the messenger works normally, but there are two pitfalls — a server in the Russia location and Telegram's own cache. Let's go through it step by step.

The Russia server sits where Telegram is blocked
Step by step
- 1
Check which location is selected in Faygo Connect. If it's Russia, switch to any other country, for example Finland or the Netherlands. The Russia server sits where Telegram is blocked, so the messenger won't open through it.
- 2
Close Telegram completely: on a phone swipe it out of the recent apps list, on a computer quit via the menu rather than just minimising the window.
- 3
Turn the VPN on and wait for the Connected status.
- 4
Open Telegram again. The messenger remembers "blocked" routes while it runs without a VPN, so restarting it after the VPN is on fixes most problems.
- 5
Still nothing — in Telegram go to Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy and make sure proxies are off. Check that no other VPN or anti-blocking app is running on the device.
- 6
If only Telegram is affected while other sites work through the VPN, reinstall the messenger. If nothing works at all, go through the "VPN won't connect: what to check" guide.
Good to know
- You can't and don't need to add Faygo as a proxy inside Telegram: Faygo Connect works system-wide, no separate setup inside the messenger is required.
- The Russia location is useful for something else: through it YouTube plays videos without ads.
- Need Telegram and VPN-averse Russian apps at the same time? Enable split tunneling with the "All Russian sites" rule — how to set it up.
Frequently asked questions
- Why do Google or YouTube show a different country than the VPN location?
- Google doesn't go by IP address alone: when many people from one region use the same address, it ties that address to their region. It's not a leak — other sites see the server's country, which you can check on the My IP page. Switching to another location helps.
- How do I watch YouTube without ads?
- Pick the Russia location in Faygo Connect — Google doesn't serve ads on Russian IP addresses. For Telegram, switch back to a foreign location afterwards.
- TikTok only shows old videos — what does the VPN have to do with it?
- TikTok remembers the region of its first launch. If the app was ever opened without a VPN from a Russian IP, the feed gets restricted. Reinstall TikTok and only launch it with the VPN on.
- One app doesn't work while everything else opens through the VPN
- Then the issue is in that app, not the VPN. Reinstall it, turn off third-party VPNs and any anti-blocking features built into the app itself.
